What is Blind Rivet?

It is a rivet which is named such as it is installed without access to the back side of the item being riveted. It consist of two things, rivet and mandrel. It is inserted into the drilled holes in the parts to be joined, and a special tool is used to draw the mandrel through the body of the rivet. The blind end expands, and the mandrel is snapped off. Blind rivets can be installed in joints from only one side of the part—making them “blind” to the opposite side. Thus it is called Blind Rivets.

How does blind rivets work?

Blind rivets are installed in a tight hole that passes through the materials being riveted. A riveter is used to pull the mandrel back while holding the rivet in place. As the mandrel is pulled back it deforms the rivet pushing the sides outward until the mandrel snaps. This expanded size forms the back side of the rivet holding the materials together.
